How to repair a deformed or cracked screed?

Screed deformations can occur both during and after the concrete screed. The most difficult to repair are permanent deformations, which occurred in the first hours after the screed was made. During this time, the concrete, releasing moisture from the surface, begins to shrink, and in the lower layer it has more water, which causes surface stresses. As a result, cracks appear in some places of the screed and its edges are raised up.

In order to avoid permanent deformations, concrete with a low water content can be used, reinforcement of the concrete slab with steel mesh or dispersed reinforcement, doweling of expansion joints or consistent care in the first phase of concrete setting. It is also important to make and age the screed in favorable environmental conditions, such as temperature around 20°C, humidity above 80%, lack of ventilation and insolation.

What to do if deformations have already appeared?

However, if deformations have already occurred, steps must be taken to repair them. In the case of permanent deformations, it is necessary to demolish the screed with the removal of concrete, and then re-lay the screed. In the case of reversible deformations, wait for the concrete to shrink and only then start repairing.

Smaller deformation

The most common method of repairing screed deformations is to fill the gaps with an epoxy resin filler or other self-leveling resin. Remember to thoroughly clean the surface of the screed from dust, dirt and other impurities before repair. After filling the cavities, the surface should be leveled, then primed and painted with paint or covered with some other material.

Bigger damages

In the case of larger damages, e.g. cracks, the damaged places should be thoroughly cleaned and filled with epoxy or self-leveling resin. Then the surface of the screed must be leveled and primed, and finally covered with a suitable material.

Important: You should also pay attention to whether the screed was made in accordance with the rules of good construction practice. Incorrect execution of the screed may result in deformations and cracks, which will deepen over time and require costly repairs.

Get help from a specialist

 screed

In the event of deformations or cracks in the screed, it is worth using the services of specialized companies that offer professional repairs. Repair consists in filling cracks and smoothing the surface. However, when there is permanent deformation, it may be necessary to supplement or replace it.

Summary

Screed deformations and cracks can be caused by various factors, such as manufacturing errors, incorrect environmental conditions during screed laying or poor quality materials. It is worth paying attention to the quality of the screed and choose a specialist company to repair it in the event of damage. Thanks to this, you can avoid costly repairs and extend the life of the floor.
