When to start underfloor heating after laying the floor?

Underfloor heating is often an inseparable element in interior design. Once we decide on the floor finish and the floor is made, there is one more important problem – after how long after the floor is made, the heating can be started? The answer to this question depends on the type of floor finish and must be carefully considered to avoid possible problems.

In the case of a floor finished with ceramic tiles, it is important whether the pipes or heating cables are embedded in the underlay or only in the adhesive layer (this applies only to electric heating). In such a situation, it is worth consulting the manufacturer of the heating system, who can provide precise information.

Underfloor heating – types of floors

The cable must not be switched on while the floor is drying to prevent possible damage. Wait until the floor is completely dry. Ceramic tiles can be glued just a few days after the floor is made. It is worth remembering, however, that the floor may still dry out during the first month of heating operation. Therefore, energy consumption may be higher due to the evaporation of residual water.

Carpet or plastic flooring can be glued after about 3 weeks from the completion of the floor. It is worth following this recommendation to give the floor enough time to dry.

Floor panels with a thickness of up to 1 cm can only be laid after about 3 months, when the concrete floor is completely dry. Heating can be turned on not earlier than after about 3 weeks from the day of finishing the floor or floor.

It is also important to prepare the substrate before starting the underfloor heating after the floor has been installed. If we are installing a screed, it is necessary to warm it up properly to prevent moisture from escaping at a later date. The temperature of the underfloor heating should be gradually increased daily by 5°C until it reaches the maximum temperature. Then, for 72 hours, leave the heating at maximum capacity, without reducing the temperature. At the end of this maximum heating phase, the temperature should be lowered by 5°C daily.

Summary

floor heating

It is worth remembering that the right time to start the underfloor heating is important for the durability and efficiency of the system. Turning on the heating too early can negatively affect the finish of the floor and lead to moisture problems or damage. Therefore, it is always worth consulting with the system manufacturer or specialist to adapt the commissioning process to the specific conditions and materials used for the floor. Underfloor heating and its activation after the floor is installed is an important step in the finishing process of the house. Correct performance of this task will ensure not only thermal comfort, but also long-term and trouble-free operation of the underfloor heating system.
