Polyethylene film (PE) – a versatile material in construction and industry

Polyethylene film is a versatile material that is successfully used in many areas. Due to its properties, it becomes irreplaceable in everyday life. Among them, we can distinguish such as resistance to water vapor, chemical factors, low temperature or mechanical factors.

PE film is a product obtained from high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) or in the recycling of plastics. It is characterized by high flexibility, lack of toxic substances and sensitivity to high temperature. This material is readily available on the market. Its price ranges from PLN 1 to PLN 14.40 per m2, depending on the application.

Applications

Construction

In the construction industry, polyethylene foil is used as moisture insulation under floors, floors, screeds, horizontal insulation of foundations or protection of thermal and acoustic insulation of floors. In addition, it is used at the stage of finishing the roof, window and door joinery.

Food industry

In the food industry, PE foil is used in the production of plastic bags, garbage bags, breakfast bags or food storage packaging. Depending on the needs, three types of polyethylene film are available for sale, differing in density and other properties:

1. HDPE film – with high density (0.94-0.96 g/cm3), high strength and higher melting point (125°C). It is used wherever resistance to chemical agents or water vapor is required.

2. LDPE film – low density (0.915-0.935 g/cm3), melting point 105-108°C and high flexibility. It is an odorless and transparent film, available as a heat-sealable or stretch film.

3. MDPE film – an intermediate product with a density of 0.926-0.940 g/cm3, combining the features of both of the above-mentioned films

How to choose the right foil?

polyethylene film

When choosing a polyethylene film, it is worth paying attention to its thickness, density, properties and approvals. PE construction foil will work well in the case of anti-moisture insulation of the floor on the ground. On the other hand, the LDPE foil can be used as a floor damp insulation, resistant to chemical agents and tearing.

The recommended thickness of the PE foil for floor insulation is 0.2-0.3 mm. If we plan to use polyethylene foil for foundation damp proofing, it is worth choosing a thickness of about 0.5-1 mm, which will ensure adequate watertightness.

Polyethylene (PE) foil is a material that is gaining more and more popularity due to its numerous advantages, such as flexibility, resistance to various factors and low price. Its wide application makes it indispensable in many areas, contributing to the improvement of comfort and safety of everyday life.
