Partition walls are an increasingly popular solution in interior design, allowing for effective division of a room into smaller zones. They are not only a practical solution, but also add charm and character to the rooms. Choosing the right partition wall can affect the appearance, functionality and comfort of using the room. However, improperly made partition walls can result in a number of problems.
When constructing partition walls, it is worth paying attention to many factors. Among them should be the selection of appropriate materials, their proper combination, as well as the accuracy of assembly. Incorrect selection of materials or inappropriate combination of elements can lead to not only poor-quality finish. They will also contribute to adverse health effects such as indoor air pollution.
Partition walls – the most common mistakes during execution
- The rigid connection of the partition walls with the ceiling should be protected against the deflection of the ceiling and the transfer of impact sounds. Fill the gaps between the ceiling and the wall with polyurethane foam and acrylic mass, which prevents cracks and noise transmission.
- Masonry of heavy partitions on the screed can lead to cracking. Lay additional reinforcements along the course of the walls and separate the floor screed with a gap with elastic filling.
- Partitions made of plasterboards should be based on pads with a thickness of approx. 1 cm, and fill the resulting gap with mounting foam.
- Installation of stud walls should take place after plastering the remaining walls and ceiling to avoid dirt and dampness of the boards.
- The screws fixing the plasterboards should be slightly recessed in the plasterboard, using the ends with the tightening depth limiter.
- In the case of blind walls, thermal insulation covered with a vapor-permeable foil should be placed on the outside, and a vapor-tight foil should be placed under the plasterboards.
- Make door openings in frame walls with additional post profiles. Joints of panels cannot run in the line of jamb posts. In the case of heavy doors, it is recommended to use jamb posts made of thicker sheet metal.
- The weakening of the sound insulation of the wall may result from the installation of inappropriate doors. It is recommended to use airtight doors with gaskets and sound insulation.
- When making grooves and installation openings in partitions, do not use chiselling power tools, hammers or cutters, as this may lead to damage to the wall. Instead, it is worth using circular wall chasers and hole saws with abrasive coating. The depth of the furrows should not exceed 1/3 of the wall thickness, and in short sections (up to 1 m) it is permissible to deepen it to half the thickness of the partition.
- Improper arrangement of electrical boxes in the wall may weaken the acoustic insulation of the partition and prevent the boxes from being embedded in thin walls. Boxes mounted on both sides of the wall should not fall out opposite each other.
Partition walls are an important element of the interior, so it is worth paying attention to the most important mistakes when building them. It also provides recommendations for improving the quality of work and avoiding problems. Compliance with the above-mentioned rules and recommendations will allow you to make durable, solid and well-insulated partitions. Thanks to this, they will comply with the expectations of investors and building regulations.
